OPERATION OF MUFFLE FURNACE

  • OBJECTIVE:
  • To lay down a procedure for Operation of Muffle furnace in Quality Control laboratory.
  • SCOPE:

This SOP is applicable to procedure for Operation of Muffle furnace in Quality Control laboratory at {Company Name} {Location}.

  • RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Officer/Executive/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for operation as per SOP.
  • Head/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for ensuring compliance as per SOP.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

             QA Head shall be Accountable for implementation of SOP.

  • PROCEDURE:
    • Muffle furnace: A muffle furnace is a type of furnace that heats materials to high temperatures while isolating them from the fuel and combustion byproducts. This isolation is achieved through a chamber, often made of refractory materials like ceramic or brick, that surrounds the heating element and the material being heated.
    • Check that the working area is clean.
    • Open the door of Muffle furnace and ensure that it is clean from inside.
    • Close the door of the Muffle furnace.
    • Connect the power cord to mains and switch on the main provided on left side of the instrument.
    • Digital display will show the temperature inside the muffle furnace.
    • Set the required temperature by pressing the ‘Push to set’ key and by up and down arrows.
    • Place the sample weighed in platinum crucible or silica crucible as required with the help of tongs and close the door.
    • After completion of the test switch off the mains and remove the sample.
    • Enter the details of usage in logbook.
