CLEANING OF GLASSWARE USED IN CHEMICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION ANALYSIS

  • OBJECTIVE:

To lay down the procedure for cleaning of Glassware used for analytical purposes.

  • SCOPE:

This SOP is applicable for the procedure for cleaning of Glassware used for analytical purposes at {Company /name} {Location}.

  • RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Officer/Executive/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for cleaning of glassware as per SOP.
  • Head/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for ensuring compliance as per SOP.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

QA Head shall be Accountable for implementation of SOP.

  • PROCEDURE:
  • After completion of analytical work, keep all the glassware in tray and transfer it into washing area.  
    • General glassware:
      • Wear a rubber apron, safety goggles, and rubber hand gloves.
      • Empty the glassware under the running tap water.
      • Remove any external marking on glassware with solvent.
      • Clean the glassware with suitable nylon brush by using cleaning solution “Teepol solution or Equivalent”.
      • Clean oily and greasy content by using 70% nitric acid solution.
      • Wash the glassware with tap water up to foaming not observed in water by vigorous shaking.
      • Rinse the glassware with purified water.
      • Ensure complete removal of cleaning solution by visual checking.
      • Keep the glassware in inverted position for water drain out from glassware.
      • Finally, the Glassware shall be rinsed with acetone and dried at 40°C.
      • After drying the Glassware shall be removed and stored in their designated places.
      • Ensure cleaning of glassware by visual inspection before use for analysis.
    • Pipette washing:
      • Rinse used pipette with tap water by tubing connected to water line.
      • Rinse it 2-3 times in plastic cylinder having cleaning solution. “Teepol or equivalent”.
      • Rinse it with tap water by tubing connected to water line up to foaming not observed in pipette.
      • Finally rinse the pipette with purified water.
      • Ensure complete removal of cleaning solution from pipette by visual checking.
      • Keep clean pipette in pipette stand for water drain out.
      • Finally, the Glassware shall be rinsed with acetone and dried at 40°C.
      • Transfer clean and dry pipettes in their designated places.
      • Ensure cleaning of pipette by visual inspection before use for analysis.
    • Burette washing:
      • Rinse used burette with tap water by tubing connected to waterline.
      • Rinse it with tap water by tubing connected to waterline up to foaming not observed in Burette.
      • Finally rinse the burette with purified water.
      • Ensure complete removal of cleaning solution from burette by visual checking.
      • Keep clean burette in burette stand for water drain out.
      • Dry it as per the general procedure mentioned above.
      • Transfer clean and dry burette in their designated places.
