- PROCEDURE:
- Product contact parts of equipment made of SS used in production areas shall be subjected to molybdenum kit testing.
- Test shall be conducted to verify that product contact part made of SS which are claimed to be SS316 are conforming to molybdenum test.
- Test is based on the principle that SS 316 and SS316 L grades of stainless steel contain increased amounts of molybdenum, a dark red colour solution results upon reaction of the surface contact of the test solution indicating increased amounts of molybdenum which is a specific character of SS316/ SS316L.
- SS 304 grade materials as it contains lesser / negligent amounts of molybdenum do not provide a colour change for the test.
- TEST PROCEDURE:
- Clean the surface of contact part under test with a clean cloth.
- Place of drop of the electrolyte solution on the clean surface of the component under test.
- Contact the positive (+) tip of the electrode (battery) to the component surface.
- Dip and rub the (-) tip of the electrode (battery) to the drop of solution placed over SS component which is under test.
- The drop of test solution shall turn to persistent red color indicative of test material as SS316 or SS316L.Drop of test solution if does not turn to red color, this shall indicate material as SS304.Wipe off the drop of solution from test surface after completing the test with a cloth.
- Tightly close the molybdenum test solution vial with its lid.
- Clean the tips of the electrode and secure the solution vial and electrode in a clean dry place.
