OBJECTIVE:

To lay down a Procedure for Preventive Maintenance of Metal Detector.

SCOPE:

This SOP is applicable for Preventive Maintenance of Metal Detector at {Company Name} {Location}.

RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Technician- Follow the instruction as per procedure.
  • Engineering Officer/Executive- Execution as per laid down procedure.
  • Engineering Head- Technical correction, review, training & monitoring of SOP.

Quality Assurance Head

PROCEDURE:

Metal detectors are essential in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure products are free from metal contaminants, maintaining safety and regulatory compliance. Regular preventive maintenance is critical to keep these devices functioning accurately and reliably. This includes routine calibration, sensitivity checks, cleaning, and inspection of components for wear or damage. Preventive maintenance helps avoid false rejections, missed detections, and costly downtime. It also ensures the equipment consistently meets industry standards such as GMP and FDA regulations. Documenting maintenance activities is important for audits and quality assurance. Overall, a robust maintenance program enhances performance, extends equipment life, and safeguards pharmaceutical product integrity.

Precautions and general conditions:

  • Refer the master plan of preventive maintenance.
  • Equipment shall be available for preventive maintenance.
  • Put status board as, under preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Do the preventive maintenance as per respective checklist.
  • Clean oil/grease stains & remove unwanted material, spares after completion of work.
  • Use necessary safety wears, like gloves, goggles, safety shoe and nose mask if required.
  • Ensure covers & guards are properly fixed.
  • Half-Yearly Preventive Maintenance of Metal Detector:
  • Switch off the main supply.
  • Check the electrical connection for proper tightness and cleanness.
  • Check the all screw for proper tightness.
  • Check the castor wheel for smooth movement if required them rectify. 
  • Switch on the main power supply and start the machine.
  • Check the earthing connection for proper working.
  • Check the metal detects sensitivity test through the ferrous, non-ferrous or stainless steel metal block whenever metal detector detect the metal and flap get open itself.
