INTRODUCTION:
According to the definition given in Annex 15 of the EU-GMP Guide, Risk Assessment is a systematic method used to identify, analyze and evaluate the critical parameters that may affect the functionality, safety and GMP compliance of equipment or processes. Risk Assessment is therefore an essential element of qualification and validation activities and forms an integral part of the Quality Risk Management (QRM) system described in ICH Q9.
The Electric Forklift is one of the critical material handling equipment used in pharmaceutical warehouses for transportation, lifting, stacking, loading and unloading of raw materials, packaging materials, finished goods and rejected materials. The proper functioning of the Electric Forklift is essential to ensure safe material handling, prevent product damage, maintain inventory integrity and comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
This Risk Assessment has been performed to identify the potential GMP, Operational and Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) risks associated with the design, installation, operation, maintenance and cleaning of the Electric Forklift. Appropriate mitigation measures have been identified to reduce the risks to an acceptable level before qualification and routine operation of the equipment.
OBJECTIVE OF RISK ASSESSMENT
At the basic stage of equipment selection and qualification, the Risk Assessment is carried out to verify that all essential design, operational, safety and GMP requirements have been adequately considered to eliminate or minimize the possibility of failure of critical equipment parameters.
The objectives of this Risk Assessment are:
• To identify potential failure modes associated with the Electric Forklift.
• To identify GMP, Operational and EHS risks related to material handling.
• To evaluate the impact of each identified risk on product quality, personnel safety and warehouse operations.
• To define suitable mitigation measures to reduce identified risks.
• To establish verification points during IQ, OQ and PQ activities.
• To ensure compliance with WHO GMP, EU GMP, PIC/S GMP and ICH Q9 Quality Risk Management principles.
• To provide documented evidence that the Electric Forklift design and operational controls are capable of consistently supporting pharmaceutical warehouse operations.
