INTRODUCTION:

    According to WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO GMP), EU GMP Annex 15, and ICH Q9 – Quality Risk Management, pharmaceutical manufacturers shall establish a documented Quality Risk Management (QRM) system to identify, assess, control, communicate and review risks that may affect product quality, patient safety and regulatory compliance throughout the lifecycle of manufacturing equipment.

    Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a structured Quality Risk Management tool used to systematically identify potential equipment failures, evaluate their impact on product quality and determine appropriate control measures to minimize or eliminate associated risks.

    The Tablet Metal Detector is a critical in-process inspection equipment installed after tablet compression and dedusting, and before primary packaging. The equipment is designed to detect and automatically reject tablets contaminated with metallic particles that may originate from:

    • Tablet compression tooling
    • Punches and dies
    • Feed frame components
    • Hopper surfaces
    • Stainless steel equipment wear
    • Mechanical maintenance activities
    • Broken machine components
    • Foreign metallic objects introduced during manufacturing

    The Tablet Metal Detector is capable of detecting:

    • Ferrous Metals (Fe)
    • Non-Ferrous Metals (NFe)
    • Stainless Steel (SS)

    Depending on the equipment design and validated sensitivity settings, contaminated tablets are automatically separated through a reject mechanism while acceptable tablets continue to the packaging process.

    The metal detection process is considered a Critical Quality Control Point (CCP) because failure to detect metallic contamination may result in:

    • Patient injury
    • Product recall
    • Batch rejection
    • Customer complaints
    • Regulatory observations
    • Loss of product quality
    • Failure to comply with GMP requirements
