  1. INTRODUCTION:

Tablet compression is a critical manufacturing operation in which the prepared granules or powder blend are compressed into tablets having predefined critical quality attributes such as tablet weight, thickness, hardness, friability, disintegration, dissolution and appearance.

Tablet thickness is an important physical quality attribute because it directly affects tablet appearance, mechanical strength, packaging suitability and, depending on the product and formulation, downstream coating and processing performance.

During compression, tablet thickness is controlled by factors including:

  • Compression force.
  • Pre-compression force.
  • Main compression force.
  • Fill depth.
  • Tablet press speed.
  • Turret speed.
  • Punch penetration.
  • Upper and lower punch movement.
  • Granule bulk density.
  • Granule moisture content.
  • Granule particle-size distribution.
  • Lubrication.
  • Powder flow.
  • Feeder performance.
  • Punch and die condition.
