SPILLAGE HANDLING IN THE LABORATORY

  • OBJECTIVE:

To lay down the procedure for handling of spillage in the laboratory.

  • SCOPE:

This SOP is applicable for the procedure for handling of spillage in the laboratory at {Company Name} {Location}.

  • RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Officer/Executive/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for following the procedure as per SOP.
  • Head/Designee Quality Control – Shall be responsible for ensuring compliance as per SOP.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

QA Head shall be Accountable for implementation of SOP.

  • PROCEDURE:
    • Ensure all persons in laboratory working area and surrounding area are cleaned without any spillage.
    • Immediately on spillage, everybody shall be aware in the laboratory inform to lab boys or house -keeping personnel to clean.
    • Solid spillage over the instruments, working bench or floor shall be cleaned with soft nylon brush or mopped with soft dry cloth and discarded in the dustbin.
    • Liquid spillage like acids, alkali or organic solvents shall be diluted with water and mopped with a cloth.
    • Clean up spillage over the skin with plenty of water.
    • If there is a spillage of laboratory chemicals over a person use Eye Washer as follows:
  • Remove the lid of eye washer
  • Allow the water to pass through the pipe for few seconds
  • With one-foot press the paddle, bring your face close to the two nozzles
  • With one-foot press the paddle, bring your face close to the two nozzles of the eye washer so that eyes are in direct contact with the water spray.
  • Continue till the irritation in eyes stops.
  • Remove your foot from the paddle to stop the flow of water and place the lid of eye washer.
