FUMIGATION IN MICROBIOLOGY TESTING AREA

  • PROCEDURE FOR THE FUMIGATION IN MICRO LAB:
  • Fumigation in a micro lab is a process of using a gas or vapor to decontaminate the lab environment, eliminating microbial growth, spores, and other pathogens. It’s a powerful method for sterilization.
  • The microbiology testing area comprises LAF Room, Cool Zone and Change rooms.
  • Ensure that the LAF rooms shall be free from all the used utensils, culture media plates and Petri plates to be incubated.
  • Switch “OFF” the Laminar air flow units.
  • Switch “OFF” the Air handling Unit.
  • Ensure the safety precautions while doing the fumigation activity.
  • Weigh about 5.0 gm of potassium Permanganate and place in a non-reactive wide mouth plastic container at each location.
  • Perform the fumigation as per the flow direction mentioned below:
  • LAF room
  • Change room-2
  • Cool zone
  • Change room-1

Note: Prior to fumigation activity, wear safety goggles, nose mask and gloves.

  • Subsequently, add about 35 ml of formaldehyde solution to the container containing potassium permanganate.
  • Immediately come out of the respective room.Record the fumigation details in Format-I.
  • Fumigation by using Fogger machine:
  • Prepare the disinfectant solution for fumigation as indicated by manufacturer.
  • Pour the prepared liquid through the funnel on the lid, use hand gloves, goggles and mask.
  • Position the fogger machine in a corner diagonally on stool or table in an angle of 45.
  • Plug in the Fogger machine to ensure gr connection.

CAUTION: Always ensure “Air filter” is in place before switching on the fogger. Replace filter every 4 months

    • Set the timer to desired minutes of fogging. For 1 lit = 20-25 min (in fixed flow mode)
    • Switch on the fogger machine and leave the clean room and seal it as “Area under Fumigation”.
    • Record the fumigation details in Format-II.

CAUTION: Fog out 500 ml of plain water after every use, to clean internal tubing’s never tamper with the nozzle. It may lead to permanent damage.

Note: Ensure all the doors shall be closed.

    • After the completion of fumigation, enter the area with safety goggle, nose mask and gloves.
    • Remove the Plastic containers from the area.
    • If any spillage is observed, handle the spillage as per SOP.
    • Switch “ON” the Air Handling Unit and put the AHU under Exhaust mode for about 2 hrs.Clean the Microbiology testing area as per schedule.
    • Fumigation shall be carried out once in a week.
