ABOUT MOLYBDENUM TEST:
The molybdenum test is a vital analytical procedure used to identify the presence of molybdenum in stainless steel, specifically to differentiate between SS304 and SS316. SS316’s superior corrosion resistance stems from its molybdenum content. This test involves applying a specialized chemical solution to the steel surface. If molybdenum is present, a distinct color change, often a reddish colour, occurs due to a chemical reaction. This color change serves as a clear indicator of SS316. The test is crucial in industries where material integrity is paramount, such as pharmaceuticals and food processing, ensuring that materials meet stringent specifications and preventing potential corrosion-related failures. This simple yet effective method safeguards product quality and safety in critical applications.
PROCEDURE:
Precautions & General Conditions:
Ensure that there is no rusting on the battery.
Ensure that the test metal is clean, dry and surface free from grease.
Ensure that the 9v battery is charged.
Procedure for Testing SS 316 and SS 304:
Put one drop of solution on the clean and dry metal surface to be tested.
Put 9v (-) ve pole on the chemical drop and (+) ve pole on the surface of material.
Remove 9v current from the chemical drop after observing the color change of the solution.
If the color changes to red color and remains for a long time then the tested metal is SS 316 grade.
If the color changes to red color and disappears immediately, then the tested metal is SS 304 grade.
